Not exactly a sigh of relief, but a fresh breath of air after first exhaling as whales do! More than skill, luck was involved in this shot, I had many opportunities to get the shot right. We were in what the Maui tour guide called a mugging- basically, lots of whales surrounding a boat. Male Humpback whales were chasing a female who was busy shielding her calf below the boat. This unwelcome courtship lasted about 45 minutes. At one point one of the whales bumped up against our boat. It was like running ashore. This was a day when photography was sheer fun and my primary concern was timing for the right pictures. Any Orange County photographer who can go on one of these whale watches is a lucky picture-taker.
